There’s an ancient leggy lavender bush in my front yard. The house is 100 years old and sometime between when the lavender was planted and when we arrived here a year ago, the bush was forgotten, uncared for. It should have been cut back each year to keep its vitality at the center, but now its lower canes are like a huge brittle claw and the flowers grow wayward and weakening. And if I were to cut the bush back to grow healthily again, it would only die. The image has struck me on a spiritual level—how it is necessary to submit to the pain of pruning, lest we grow crooked and our flaws are so foundational to our identity that our only hope is to be remade entirely.
